Schizophrenia and Sjögren Syndrome: Root Causes and How to Support

Did you know that according to TCM, Schizophrenia is considered a spleen, heart and liver deficiency? It is not treated as a mysterious mental illness with no known root cause and no possible cure.

Sometimes this deficiency can manifest as a result of burnout from stress (mental, environmental, and/or from malnourishment). Other times, if the mother is depleted prior to, or during, pregnancy, she can pass down a weakened constitution to her baby (i.e. less Jing, which is known as vital life force) and this can manifest in certain conditions including schizophrenia.

The root cause of Sjögren Syndrome, known in TCM as “Dry Organ Disorder,” is categorized as an autoimmune disorder from a conventional medicine perspective. TCM sees the root causes of this condition as: yin deficiency, dryness-heat, and a deficiency of qi and body fluid.

There are three herbs that comprise the herbal formula that supports both of these diseases:

Gan Mai Da Zao Tang.

These herbs are:

  • Red Dates

  • Licorice Root

  • Wheat Flour

Da Zao (Red Dates, also known as Jujube Dates)

Gan Cao (Licorice Root)

Xiao Mai (Wheat Flour)

You can make your own formula using raw herbs. Dr. Wu recommends using One Degree Sprouted Spelt Flour if you do so.
