Case Study: Use Opposite Method to Treat Red and Swollen Eye

Patient Testimony:
I am a Chinese teacher. In recent years, I have been prone to inflammation and mouth ulcers. Recently, my left eye has become very swollen, accompanied by burning and tingling sensations. I went to a western medicine hospital for treatment. The doctor prescribed oral antibiotics and antibiotic eye drops. After two days of treatment, the symptoms did not alleviate, but worsened.
I consulted with Dr. Wu for Chinese medicine treatment. Dr. Wu Mingjie diagnosed that I had kidney yang deficiency and syndrome of true cold disease with false heat manifestation. This type of infectious disease is called Yin Syndrome in Chinese Medicine. I was treated with Tui Na massage therapy and quantum energy therapy, and on the same day I took Zhenwu Decoction for yang deficiency. When I woke up the next day, I noticed that the swelling of my left eye was significantly reduced, the blain in the eye has opened up, and some pus was discharged by itself. On the third day, the swelling basically disappeared and the pain eased significantly. Now, my eyes are basically healed, only a slight discomfort is left.
From this experience, I deeply realized that Chinese medicine truly treats diseases from their root causes, rather than “only focusing on the head for head problems, and foot for foot problems”, like western medicine often does. If the cause is not found, and the condition is only temporarily suppressed, one day you will have a bad outbreak. Chinese medicine distinguishes Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang is the general principle of TCM differentiation and one of the theories of Taoism. Practice is the only criterion for testing the truth. From this experience, I feel even more determined that if I were to get sick again, I can't just blindly listen to the advice of a doctor. Instead, I should distinguish between yin and yang and find out the source of the illness. Pain is due to blockage, and no blockage then pain. Only by opening up the body's blockages, can the body's pain be truly cured.
The day after treatment on July 4, 2020:
Dr. Wu’s note:
The main complaint of this case is that the patient’s left eye is red, swollen, hot and painful. However, the patient has weak spleen and kidney pulse, and occasionally has runny nose with clear discharge. Combining the results of all four diagnostic methods, I concluded that the syndrome of the left eye is caused by the deficiency of the kidney yang. Because people usually don’t understand why the symptoms of red, swollen, hot and painful should be treated with Zhenwu Decoction, a very hot decoction that tonifies the kidney yang, in addition to explaining to the patient, I also consulted with Dr. Zheng Zhenqiang, a TCM doctor from New York. We agreed that the best treatment is using Zhenwu Decoction to support the yang. The prescription is Zhenwu Decoction 5 grams twice a day, take with warm water after meals, for ten consecutive days.
Comments from Chief Physician Zheng Maobin, Ruikang Hospital Affiliated to Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine:
In my career, I have met all kinds of patients. The best patients are those who are educated, because they can feel the subtle changes in the diagnosis and treatment, and record and share with the doctor!
The development of medicine is inseparable from doctor-patient interaction, which may be a driving force for the development of Chinese medicine.
Only with observation by multiple parties and obtaining real information in diagnosis and treatment can we better reflect the holistic view of Chinese medicine. The holistic view is not the subjective consideration of the doctor, but also requires the active participation of the patient.
Thank you Dr. Mingjie Wu for sharing!
This is undoubtedly a classic case. I recommend it to be included in the teaching materials for doctors!
Considering only physics and chemistry would not come up with the method of warming and smoothing the qi to uplift the drooping. The habitual use of antibiotics will make the patient's physique colder for a long time.
Holism and dialectical thinking is seeking truth from facts!
Of course, failure is inevitable if it violates the law of seeking truth from facts. The heart of a doctor lies in seeking truth from facts!
